GBTA Europe Releases Advocacy Research Results to European Commission

Buyers Speak Out About Competition, Data, Security and Environment

Brussels, Belgium : The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), the premier business travel organisation, today announced that it had presented the initial results of its pan-European advocacy research to the European Commission at a joint event held with the European Technology & Travel Services Association (ETTSA) in Brussels.

The event, entitled “Championing Competition, Transparency and Consumer Choice: The Role of Independent Travel Distribution”, held last week at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences attracted over fifty policy makers and European business travel association representatives.  After the presentation of a video championing independent travel distribution, created by ETTSA and GBTA, the association’s Managing Director, Paul Tilstone, presented the results of the research and then the chair of the association’s advocacy group, Hans Ingo Biehl, participated on a panel with Saïd El Khadraoui - MEP, Member of European Parliament Committee on Transport and Tourism, Christopher Irwin - Vice President, European Passenger Federation and Christoph Klenner, ETTSA Secretary General.

Results of the research presented to the group, taken across one hundred and two GBTA members, includes;

·          78% of buyers would like to see standardised security across European airports

·          74% are in favour of the introduction of a trusted traveller programme

·          70% think that the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) should be delayed until it includes all airlines globally

·          85% think airlines are acting in ways contrary to fair competition, through unbundling and direct connect

·          65% think airline consolidation will result in higher prices but 47% thought it would result in better schedules

·          59% believe existing data could be or possibly is already being abused by airlines

The results of the research will be released in full to GBTA members as part of a complete European manifesto created by the GBTA Europe Advocacy Group, chaired by Mr Biehl, who also acts asExecutive Director of the German buyer-led business travel association, Verband Deutches Reisemanagement (VDR).  The manifesto will then be presented to European Commission departments  covering consumer rights, environment,  transportation and competition.

Talking about the event and the results of the research, Hans Ingo Biehl said, ” We wanted to make sure that we formulated our positions on the basis of the buyers’ real views. This research will be used to engage further with policy advisors of the European Commission after the success of initial engagement with the Commission this year. As a buyer-led group our goal is to seek to be consulted on issues affecting our members rather than to lobby per se. The buyer needs a voice in Europe and our work to date and plans ahead are ensuring that GBTA is that independent voice .”

GBTA has recently appointed Jan Henrik Ulvatne, General Manager, Norwegian Business Travel Association (NBTA) to support Mr Biehl in leading the GBTA Europe Advocacy Group.  VDR and NBTA were joined at the event in Brussels by delegations from the Iberian Business Travel Association (IBTA), Institute of Travel & Meetings UK & Ireland (ITM), Netherlands Association of Travel Management (NATM), Swedish Business Travel Association (SBTA), Danish Business Travel Association (DBTA) and the Finnish Business Travel Association (FBTA).
